“Must Know” Tips Before Getting Invisalign

June 27, 2015

ThinkstockPhotos-177000598The orthodontic and cosmetic dentistry fields have come a long way even in the last five years. What was in back in the day is nothing more than a memory today. We’re in the business of straightening teeth and are always keeping our ears and eyes out for the latest techniques and procedures. One of the most advanced orthodontic and cosmetic dentistry treatments available today is the unique Invisalign system. It’s taken the dental industry by storm as more and more people are ditching metal braces and opting for this fantastic treatment. It’s the preferred teeth-straightening procedure for teens and adults, so you know you’re in great company. Deciding whether or not Invisalign is right for you isn’t a quick process, but if you’re eligible for treatment, there are some things you need to know before choosing Invisalign. At Robison Dental Group in Canton, MI, we want you to know ahead of time what treatment will involve, and how best to prepare.

Invisalign – Yay or Nay?

“Is Invisalign right for me?” It’s what countless patients ask themselves. Though it has become one of the most preferred ways to straighten teeth, it isn’t right for everyone. Why? Usually, the main culprit is a patient’s bite. It’s important to note that Invisalign is used for cosmetic purposes. If you have a bite that’s causing problems, Invisalign may not be compatible with your situation. Our cosmetic dentist will know the answer for sure once your mouth is thoroughly inspected.

It isn’t just bite problems that can derail the possibility of receiving Invisalign treatment. A lot of patients discover that there is a lot of upkeep and responsibility falls solely on their shoulders. Yes, it offers many beneficial alternatives over traditional metal braces, but unlike braces, you have the power to straighten whenever you want. How much time you spend receiving treatment is entirely up to you and how closely you’re following your regimen.

Below are some tips to consider before discussing Invisalign treatment with us:

1.       Prepare to wear your aligners for a prolonged period of time. You must be able to commit to 22 hours of wear and changing aligners every two weeks.

2.       Embrace that strange, straightening feeling. Your teeth are shifting, which is a good thing. You may experience some tooth sensitivity and pain at first, but it should go away after a couple days.

3.       Perfect your brushing and flossing regimen. Trays can be a breeding ground for bacteria to grow, so brushing and flossing is vital.

4.       Avoid sugary foods and drinks like the plague. We all know the horror sugary treats can cause to your teeth, but if any sugar content is left behind in your trays, it can stain your teeth.

Remember, the pace of your treatment and its success is dependent on you. By being proactive in your treatment, you’ll see results that will leave you breathless.

Sedation Dentistry in Canton, MI

May 20, 2015

76132811If you’re fearful of seeing the dentist, then you might be reassured to know that you’re in good company… lots of good company. The Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS Education) estimates that some 30 percent of the population is afraid to visit the dentist. As a consequence, they don’t receive the dental care they need, which might be compromising not only their oral health, but their general health, too. There is, however, a good way to overcome this fear. With sedation dentistry, Dr. J. D. Robison at Robison Dental Group in Canton, MI, can allay your fears and apprehension, so you can relax and have those dental procedures that may be long overdue.

Regardless of why you’re fearful of the dentist—a bad memory from a childhood visit to the dentist, fear of needles and other sharp objects, the sights, sounds and smell in a dental office—sedation dentistry can help. Dr. Robison uses a form of sedation dentistry called oral sedation.

What is Oral Sedation Dentistry?

With oral sedation dentistry, Dr. Robison prescribes a mild sedative medication for you to take at a designated time prior to your dental appointment. Once you’ve taken this small pill, you’ll shortly begin to feel yourself relax and your worries will melt away. Bear in mind that once you’ve taken the medicine you cannot operate a vehicle. A friend or family member will need to drive you to your appointment and back home again.

Once you arrive at Robison Dental Group, we’ll make sure you’re completely comfortable before we begin any procedure. Depending on the treatment that you’re having, a local anesthetic may be necessary. But by the time you’re settled in the dentist’s chair, you may feel like you’re sleeping and, therefore, have no recollection of any part of your procedure. In reality, you are awake enough to respond to Dr. Robison when he speaks to you during your treatment.

Sleep Apnea and Snoring Therapy in Canton, MI

March 20, 2015

474189791All is quiet. The house is dark. Everyone is asleep. Everyone, that is, except you, because the person next to you is snoring to beat the band! Did you know that snoring may be a sign of a much more serious condition called sleep apnea? For the sake of your loved one’s health—and so you can get some sleep at night—come to the Robison Dental Group in Canton, MI, for sleep apnea and snoring therapy.

Sleep apnea is literally the cessation of breathing during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form of the condition. In this case, soft tissue in the throat and neck, including your tongue, relax during sleep and tend to fall back and block the airway. Consequently, there is loud snoring. Other symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Frequent trips to the bathroom during the night
  • Daytime sleepiness and difficulty concentrating

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Dr. J.D. Robison and his staff at Robison Dental Group can diagnose and treat sleep apnea, so you’ll once again be sleeping peacefully at night and avoiding a number of potentially serious health consequences ranging from high blood pressure and stroke to diabetes and depression. We will prescribe a custom-fitted intraoral appliance to wear at night. The appliance repositions your jaw in order to keep your airway open while you sleep. This appliance is simple-to-use, is easy to travel with and is a non-surgical, quiet treatment option that is proven successful for mild to moderate snoring and sleep apnea or for patients who do not tolerate CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure machine.

Restore Your Smile with Dental Implants in Canton, MI

February 20, 2015

480753457Having one or more missing teeth is no picnic. Even one missing tooth can make eating and speaking difficult. And then there’s the self-conscious feeling of knowing that when you smile, people might focus on your missing tooth. These troubles can be eliminated with dental implants. Dr. J.D. Robison at Robinson Dental Group has used dental implants to the restore the smiles of many people in and around Canton, MI, and he can do the same for you!

Although you have other choices when it comes to tooth restoration—crown and bridgework, partial and full dentures—the most lifelike among them is a dental implant. The reason is a dental implant replaces not only the crown of the tooth—the portion that’s visible—but also the tooth’s root. As such, an implant affords greater stability as well as the advantage of maintaining jawbone structure, because the implant averts bone deterioration.

What’s involved in the Dental Implant Procedure?

If we determine that a dental implant is the best option for you, then the first step is minor surgery during which Dr. Robison implants a titanium post in the bone beneath the open socket of your missing tooth. If your dental implant will be used to secure a partial or full denture, then he will strategically place more than one implant along your arch. As you heal, the post or posts and your jawbone will fuse together in a process called osseointegration. During this time, Dr. Robison will likely protect the implant with a temporary crown.

Once you have completely healed, you’ll return to our office to have your permanent, custom-crafted porcelain crown affixed to the implant. The result is a solid tooth restoration that looks a functions like a real tooth.

What Causes TMJ Disorder?

September 15, 2014

506930955

If you are suffering from headaches or chronic migraines, a disorder of the jaw joint, or the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ), may be the culprit. Dr. Robison offers comprehensive treatment and prevention therapy of TMJ disorders. He can evaluate your symptoms to determine if they are caused by a TMJ disorder. But what exactly causes a TMJ disorder in the first place?

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Explained

Imagine the skull as two separate bone parts joined together by a network of joints and muscles. The lower part, or jaw, hinges upon the upper part of the skull through the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). When you open and close your mouth, the jaw bone rotates in its socket as your teeth part and then come back together. It’s at this point that things can go wrong.

When you bite down, your teeth are supposed to come into contact at the same time. However, for some people, their back teeth might come together before their front teeth. To avoid the pain that occurs when a bite is uneven, the brain and jaw muscles compensate. The jaw bone is pulled out of its socket to ensure that your teeth come together evenly. While you’re sleeping, this compensation causes clenching and grinding, and your jawbone stays out of its socket all night. These muscles eventually fatigue and your TMJ deteriorates leading to spasms and inflammation. You might also experience clicking and popping sounds and chronic aches and pains in the head, face and neck.

TMJ Disorder Treatment

Early detection can prevent joint deterioration and get rid of the pain and discomfort it causes. Your dentist can customize a special orthotic plate for you to wear a night, which can stabilize the jaw joint relationship, alleviating the symptoms of TMJ disorder and preventing any further deterioration. If you suspect that your headaches and jaw discomfort symptoms could be caused by a TMJ disorder, contact Dr. Robison today to schedule a TMJ disorder consultation. Dr. Robinson proudly serves patients throughout Canton, MI community, including Ann Arbor, Northville, Westland, Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

How Can Chewing Gum Help Your Smile?

June 25, 2014

gumKeeping your smile clean throughout the day will help you enjoy good oral health. It’s not always possible to brush and floss after every meal, though. Maybe you’re at work or you’re out all day doing errands. What can you do to help you keep food and debris away from your teeth and gums?

Try chewing gum in between snacks and meals. Because gum is sticky, chewing a piece of gum after you eat will help you clean your teeth. What’s more, chewing stimulates the production of saliva, which has a neutralizing effect on acid. The one-two punch of cleaning food away from teeth and neutralizing acid will protect your smile from decay and more.

What Kind of Gum Should I Chew?

The brand of gum you choose matters less than choosing a gum that’s sugar free. Sugar spurs the production of decay-causing cavity, while sugar free gum promotes a more stable environment. Some brands of gum use xylitol as the sweetener. Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from the fibers of plants and also has a neutralizing effect on acid. That’s why xylitol is also used in some toothpaste brands as well. Support your oral health by chewing sugar free or xylitol gum.

Do you have questions about keeping your smile clean? Call us today with your questions or to schedule an appointment. Robison Dental Group is located in Canton and serves patients from Michigan, Ann Arbor, Northville, Westland, and Plymouth.

Smoking, E-Cigs, and Your Smile

June 12, 2014

You already know that smoking cigarettes can damage your lungs and lead to cancer, but did you know it can also lead to a range of oral health issues? The biggest of these is oral cancer. Others include:

  • Bad breath
  • Staining
  • Increase buildup of bacteria and plaque
  • Greater risk of gum disease

Today, many are trusting in e-cigs as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes. But given how new e-cigs are, there’s still a lot that’s unknown about them. Are they really safer for your oral and overall health, or do they come with long-term effects of their own?

As explained in this video, there are some reasons to be concerned. First, e-cigs may not contain tobacco, but they do use vaporized nicotine, which contains harmful chemicals that can be absorbed into the bloodstream, in this case through the sensitive soft tissue of the cheeks. Plus, with repeated use, patients may experience gum recession or changes to the lips.

To learn more about the relationship between oral health, smoking, and e-cigs, take a moment to watch the video below or call Robison Dental Group. Our Canton dental office serves patients from Michigan, Ann Arbor, Northville, Westland, and Plymouth.
