Effects of Missing Teeth

Whether you lost a few teeth recently in a sports-related accident or you lost all of them due to advanced gum disease, it’s important that you come to our office to explore your tooth-replacement options. After all, the gaps in your smile don’t just impact your self-esteem. In fact, patients often experience:

  • Oral health problems, like dental drift
  • Difficulty eating a varied, well-balanced diet
  • Trouble enunciating clearly
  • Facial sagging due to bone loss

The good news is that problems like these don’t need to be your new reality. At your consultation, we will learn all about your dental history, needs, and goals so we can determine if you’re a good candidate for dentures.

What Qualifies You for Dentures?

Good candidates for dentures have a few things in common, including moderate to severe tooth loss. They also need to have healthy gums, a commitment to taking good care of their smiles, and a willingness to break any existing bad habits, like smoking. If this sounds like you, then don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with Dr. Robison. At this visit, he’ll examine the condition of your gums and any remaining natural teeth you have to ensure that this method is the best option for you.

Alternative Tooth-Replacement Options

If we determine that dentures aren’t the best tooth-replacement option for you, don’t worry – that doesn’t mean you have to live with gaps in your smile moving forward. We’re proud to offer our patients two additional lifelike, custom, and durable solutions:

  • Dental Bridges – Anchored in place with two dental crowns, the prosthetic teeth literally “bridge” the gap in your smile. Although this restoration is often used to replace one missing tooth, it can also replace up to four missing teeth consecutively.
  • Dental Implants – This state-of-the-art solution is unique because it can replace both the root and crown of your tooth. Not only that, but it can last for 30+ years with proper care, and they don’t move out of place because they are inserted directly into the jawbone.

If you are interested in learning more about dentures or any of the other tooth-replacement solutions we offer, don’t hesitate to take the next step: schedule a consultation with us at our Canton office.

Types of Dentures

Dentures are more versatile than many people realize and can be applied in different ways to rebuild your grin. Dr. Robison uses high-quality, tooth-colored materials to ensure they look and feel natural. They’ll be completely customized just for you so that they fit like a glove so in time, you might even forget that you’re wearing them.

After his examination, Dr. Robison will recommend one of the following types:

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are intended to replace several missing teeth and are anchored in place with metal clasps that connect with your remaining ones. They’re color-matched to your grin’s natural hue so that no one can tell the difference between your artificial teeth and the ones you were born with! They’re intended to be removable so that you can easily take them out for cleaning.

Full Dentures

If you’re missing all or most of your teeth, then you would probably do best with full dentures. These replace your entire arch and are made with lifelike materials to enhance your appearance. They’re created to form a firm suction against your gums to remain in place all day long but are intended to be taken out for cleaning and to soak at night.

Implant Dentures

If your jawbone is too weak or flat and you’re unable to fully support traditional dentures, then Dr. Robison might recommend this cross-over with dental implants. Several titanium rods will be strategically placed directly into your jawbone. Once your dentures are attached to them, they’re considered ‘permanent’ and can only be removed by a professional.

The Benefits of Dentures

Tooth loss can detract from your daily quality of life in several ways. If you’re struggling to eat, speak, or smile confidently, you can potentially benefit from full or partial dentures. These versatile prosthetics can restore your mouth’s appearance and functionality, regardless of how many natural teeth you have remaining.

Psychological Benefits

Many patients in Canton have a hard time accepting the changes to their appearance and abilities after tooth loss. Unfortunately, if you’re overly anxious about being judged for your dental condition, you might avoid spending time with others, which can lead to feelings of anxiety or depression.

With dentures in place, you’ll have two complete arches of teeth so you look and feel like the most beautiful, capable version of yourself.

Clearer Enunciation

Having gaps in your grin can make it difficult to enunciate clearly because you press your tongue against your teeth to form certain sounds. You might notice a lisp, slur, or other issues when some go missing.

Thankfully, dentures function as artificial teeth to rebuild your arches to overcome these changes. It might take about a month for your tongue and other supporting muscles to adjust to their presence, and you can ease this transition by practicing reading or speaking out loud to yourself at home.

Improves Nutrition

Patients missing teeth might also experience gastrointestinal concerns from eating overly large pieces of food that they can’t chew, or develop malnutrition from trying to stick to softer foods that are less wholesome.

Dentures can restore some of your original bite force so that you can enjoy a variety of healthy foods that support your oral and overall well-being.

Preserves Oral Health

If you still have natural teeth remaining in your mouth, they are prone to shifting out of place to try to fill in the empty spaces left behind by the ones that fell or were knocked out. This can wear down your enamel prematurely, increasing your vulnerability to tooth decay and injuries.

Wearing your dentures consistently ensures everything stays in its place to prevent potential problems.

Expands Opportunities

Your smile is one of the first things others notice about you, and if you’re missing teeth, you’re less likely to make a favorable impression. For example, did you know that having dental problems is negatively associated with the probability of being employed?

Rebuilding your grin with full or partial dentures can boost your confidence and appearance. This, in turn, contributes to better professional achievements, a busier social calendar, and more meaningful relationships.
